Here is an original, U.S. Mk I Trench Knife manufactured by Landers, Frary, and Clark in 1918. It is a double-edges dagger with a 6-3/4" blade and a brass knuckle handle with a guard. The pommel nut that holds the blade in place is pointed for inflicting even more damage in close combat. These knives were originally made in France by a company named "Au Lion". The French-made knives actually made it into the hand of American troops in WWII. The American-made knives arrived in France too late to be issued. It was in WWII that they came into their own. With blued blades and blackened scabbards these were issued in large numbers to specialized units. There are numerous photos showing American Paratroopers in North Afrika with their new Mk I knives. This knife is in excellent condition. Probably unissued, it retains more than 95% of the blued finish on the blade with light friction wear from the scabbard. The blade has never been sharpened, but there are some light machine tool marks near the tip of the blade. The darkened handle has some wear on top from handling or storage. The scabbard is in very fine condition. There is some wear of the black finish from handling. The exposed metal has a plum brown patina. The scabbard is clearly marked with "L.F.& C." over "1918". The hooks are in perfect condition. This is about as nice an example of a Mk I knife as can be found. Stock no. 33033
