Item :	SCARCE, MODEL 1847 U.S. CAVALRY MUSKETOON

Description :

Here is an original Model 1847 U.S. Cavalry Musketoon of .69 caliber. These were produced at Springfield Armory between 1848 and 1859. The exact number produced is unknown, but believed to be between 5,800 and 6,700. They had a 26" smooth bore barrel and were fitted with a ring bar and ring. The iron ramrod is fitted with swivels under the muzzle. This was the last single shot muzzle loading carbine in use before being eclipsed by breech loading and repeating carbines. This one is in good to very good condition. It has an overall mottled silver and dark brown patina. There is significant pitting around the bolster and on the ring bar from percussion cap splash. The brass furniture has a good dark bronze patina. The mechanics work very well. The bore is quite good. There are some pits, but it is mostly smooth. The stock looks very good, but there appears to be an old repair at the wrist. It is well done and hard to see, but I believe the wrist may have been broken at one time. There is a crack through the trigger guard plate at the front screw. On casual inspection, aside from the trigger plate, the break is invisible! These were made in small numbers and are fairly scarce.
