Item :	CIVIL WAR MODEL 1859 SHARPS MILITARY RIFLE WITH SABER BAYONET

This is an original, Civil War, Model 1859 Military Rifle with an original brass hilted Saber Bayonet. The Sharps was a .52 caliber, percussion, breech loading arm. Military rifles had 30 inch barrels, secured by 3 bands to the full length fore arm. All had an iron patch box. The Model 1859 rifle came to fame as the weapon of choice of Col. Hiram Berdan's 1st and 2nd Regiments of U.S. Sharpshooters, who took their name from the rifle. This rifle has seen some hard use and remains in about antique good condition. It has an overall dark brown patina, mostly smooth, but with some areas of pitting, most notably on the receiver and barrel where it joins the receiver. The bore is dark and pitted, but has evident rifling along its length. The mechanics work well. The wood has a number of dings, scratches, and gouges from its years of service. There are some cracks in the forearm running forward from the receiver. I think a couple of screws and one barrel band retention spring have been replaced.The bayonet is in very good condition with a mottled steel blade. There are several spots of corrosion on the blade. The brass hilt has a nice golden bronze patina. The spring retainer that holds the bayonet on the lug is broken and the button missing. Only a portion of the spring remains. This is no museum piece, but it is a scarce rifle that is much sought by Civil War collectors.
