CIVIL WAR WHITNEY 2ND MODEL NAVY REVOLVER
Description :
Here is an original, Civil War, Whitney .36 Caliber Navy Revolver. This is a 2nd Model, 4th type Whitney with the Colt style wedge lever latch. The Whitney was one of the first practical solid frame revolvers and became a serious competitor to the Colt revolvers. They were quite popular during the war and used in large numbers. Many were in southern hands at the beginning of the war and saw service with Confederate troops. About 33,000 were produced in total. This revolver falls in a known Virginia serial number range, but is not one of the revolvers specifically listed. It is in fine condition. Traces of the blued finish remain on the lever and hammer. The remainder of the gun has turned a mostly smooth brown. The barrel markings remain crisp. The brass trigger guard has a dark patina. The mechanics work well, with tight lock up. The bore has some pitting, particularly near the muzzle, but most of the rifling remains visible. The grips are complete, with about half of the varnish remaining. This is a nice Whitney revolver, a type that served well in the Civil War. Stock no. 20981
