Item No.: 8153 Price : SOLD
Item : CIVIL WAR TRIPLETT & SCOTT REPEATING CARBINE
Description :
This is an original Triplett & Scott Repeating Carbine manufactured in 1865 by the Meriden Manufacturing Company of Meriden, Connecticut. The Triplett & Scott was a breech loading, repeating carbine, firing a .50 caliber rimfire cartridge fed from a 7-round tubular magazine in the butt stock. It used a unique, rotating action. To reload, a small button near the hammer was depressed and the barrel assembly twisted to the right. The barrel was rotated about 190 degrees until aligned with the magazine tube, at which point a new cartridge was fed into the chamber. The action was then rotated back until the barrel locked into place at which point it could be cocked and fired. 5,000 of these arms were contracted by the state of Kentucky to arm Home Guard units guarding Sherman's supply trains. They were delivered too late for service during the war. One of the Meriden Manufacturing Company's co-founders, Charles Parker, would go on to co-found the famed Parker Shotgun Company. This carbine is in very good condition. It has the more scarce 22" round barrel. The barrel retains traces of blued finish, with the remainder a speckled brown. This mottled brown finish continues on the remainder of the gun. There is some light pitting on the barrel ahead of the barrel band. The mechanics work very well. The bore has a few pits, but exhibits strong rifling along its length. The stock is in good condition. The wood over the magazine tube is quite thin on Triplett & Scott carbines and often cracks. This one is no exception. There are two cracks running along the magazine tube, one of which extends through the wrist. The Triplett & Scott, with only 5,000 produced, is a scarce arm. Only 2,000 were produced with the 22" barrel. Stock no. 21420
