ORIGINAL, CIVIL WAR MAYNARD PERCUSSION CARBINE
Description :
This is an original, Civil War 2nd Model Maynard Cavalry Carbine manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. Also known as the Model 1863, the Maynard was a breech loading, percussion arm of .50 caliber. About 20,202 2nd Model Maynard Carbines were produced from 1863-1865. Cavalry units known to have been issued the Maynard were the 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee. This Maynard Carbine is in very good condition. There is no finish left on the metal surfaces. The barrel and lever have a smooth brown patina. The receiver has been cleaned to a silvery pewter color. The butt has a rough dark brown patina. The bore is very good. There are a few specks of pitting, but the rifling is strong. The action works very well and lock up is tight. The stock is very good with just a few small dings from use. There is no visible cartouche. The left side appears to have gotten wet at some time, and there are some fine "checks" along the grain in the wood. This would be a great shooter for someone in the North-South Skirmish Association. Stock no. 20148
