Item No.: 8174 Price : $2,675.00
Item : SHARPS MODEL 1863 ARMY RIFLE, .52 CALIBER
Description :
This is an original, Civil War, Model 1863 Military Rifle. The Sharps was a .52 caliber, percussion, breech loading arm. Military rifles had 30 inch barrels, secured by 3 bands to the full length fore arm. All had an iron patch box. This rifle is designed to be fitted with a socket bayonet. The rifle is in fair to good condition overall. The barrel retains about 70% of its blued finish. The receiver and stock furniture have a mottled brown patina. The loading lever has most of the case color remaining, so is probably replaced. The action works well, but the Lawrence pellet primer does not. The bore is pretty bad, with large areas of heavy pitting. There is some visible rifling. The stock is good with a scattering of dings and gouges from use. There are no visible cartouches. The patchbox spring is missing. The rear sight is a later version of the Lawrence sight dated "FEB. 15th 1869". In its earlier M1859 configuration, the Sharps Military rifle came to fame as the weapon of choice of Col. Hiram Berdan's 1st and 2nd Regiments of U.S. Sharpshooters, who took their name from the rifle. It is an iconic American firearm. Stock no. 21437
