Item No.: 8227 Price : $1,750.00
Item : L. POMEROY M1808 CONNECTICUT CONTRACT FLINTLOCK MUSKET
Description :
This is an original Model 1808 Contract Flintlock Musket of .69 caliber made by Lemuel Pomeroy of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Fearing a war with Europe, Congress granted the War Department the authority to contract for 85,200 muskets to be built by 19 different American gun makers. A number of other independent makers produced muskets of this type as well. Pomeroy was one of these independents, with his entire production going to a number of state contracts. This musket was made for the state of Connecticut. It is marked on the lock plate with a simple "S. CT.". This marking and the Inspector's initials "S.J." also appear on the barrel near the breech. The musket is in good to very good condition. It appears to be in its original flintlock configuration. The majority of the metal has a dark brown patina, heavier near the breech and lock. The forward portion of the barrel is more mottled with some steel color showing through. The butt has a rougher brown patina. The brass pan of the lock has blackened with tarnish from the burning powder. The mechanics work well. The bore of the 42" barrel is fair, dark with some pitting, but mostly smooth. The stock is solid, with a few small cracks. There is a hairline crack running about 4" from the rear barrel band up to the top of the barrel channel on the right side of the stock. There are small cracks in the lock panel at the front and back each about an inch long. There are a few chips along the top of the barrel channel on the right side. The stock appears to have been given a dark colored surface overcoat when built. The stock has numerous small scrapes, dings, and gouges from use and each reveals lighter colored wood beneath. The iron ramrod has had flats and notches filed into it where it bells. A 9" piece has been welded onto the other end to restore it to its original length. This is a nice, early, Connecticut longarm. Stock no. 21623
