Item No.: 8240 Price : SOLD
Item : CIVIL WAR ERA TARGET/SNIPER RIFLE W/ MALCOLM SCOPE
Description :
This is a heavy, percussion underhammer target rifle of the Civil War era. It has been mounted with a Wm. Malcolm full length Telescopic sight. This is the type rifle used by sharpshooter's as a sniper weapon during the Civil War. The rifle has an octagonal .45 caliber barrel, 32" long and measuring 1 3/8" across the flats. There is a maker's name on the barrel, but it is faint and can not be read. The name starts with "P.A. Rhi" and then fades out. I believe the rifle was freshed out and redone at a later time. It may have been re-browned at that time as well. There are later markings on the barrel that are crisp, to include "J.B. Miller" and "1874", and these might be from the gunsmith that worked on the gun. The rifle retains its original false muzzle and brass bullet starter/muzzle protector. The rifle is in fine condition. The barrel has a smooth browned finish. It retains nearly all of this finish. The hammer and trigger retain about half of their case colored finish. The mechanics work very well and the rifle has an excellent bore. It is bright and shiny. The stock is very fine with a smooth finish. The brass crescent butt plate has a nice bronze patina. There are holes drilled in the barrel tang for mounting a sight. There is a threaded hole in the underside of the barrel near the muzzle. The period Malcolm scope is 34" long and remains in working condition. The lenses are a bit dirty, but you can see fairly well. It has very short eye relief, requiring the shooter to almost press their eye to the scope. The eyepiece is made of hard rubber. The barrel of the scope is marked "Wm. MALCOLM" over "SYRACUSE, NY". It has a blued steel body, which is just starting to turn brown. The Malcolm style mounts are dovetailed into the barrel. The rear mount allows elevation adjustment and the front can be adjusted for windage. This is a very nice example of the type rifle used by sniper's of both sides during the Civil War. it is unusual to find them with the false muzzle and starter. Stock no. 21603
