Item No.: 8349 Price : SOLD
Item : CIVIL WAR, IMPORTED AUSTRIAN MODEL 1842 RIFLED & SIGHTED MUSKET W/ BAYONET
Description :
This is an original, Austrian Model 1842 Musket of .71 caliber, originally manufactured in 1847. As the Union struggled to equip its rapidly growing army in the opening days of the Civil War, the armies of Europe emptied their arsenals, disposing of as many obsolete arms as possible. The U.S. Ordnance Department purchased 68,505 Austrian Model 1842 muskets to equip its soldiers. In addition, the Confederacy is believed to have acquired an additional 60,000 Austrian arms. Both sides acquired muskets in a number of variations. The Model 1842 was originally built as a tube lock with a smoothbore barrel. This musket was converted to percussion and rifled before being shipped to America early in the Civil War. The new percussion bolster was brazed directly onto the breech. The lock plate is stamped with a small Austrian Eagle. The date, "847", is stamped on the left side of the barrel at the breech. This musket is in fine condition. The metal is armory bright with just a few tiny speckles of brown patina. The action works perfectly. The bore is very fine. There is some very minor surface pitting, but the bore is mostly shiny with strong rifling. The stock is an early type with no cheek piece. It is in fine condition as well, with very few dings or scratches. There is an old chip at the toe of the stock on the right side of the butt. It measures about 7/8" x 3/8". There is another tiny chip behind the middle band on the right side of the stock. The musket has the correct heavy ended cupped ram rod used with rifled arms. Included is an original, correct, triangular bayonet. This is an early musket and was fitted for the Model 1828 pattern bayonet which used a spring catch under the barrel to engage a notched eccentric ring on the socket. The bayonet is in very good condition with a heavily speckled brown patina. There is some old pitting on some surfaces as well. This is a true American Civil War arm. It is in great condition and will likely shoot well. Stock no. 21955
